The coming of Spring is a nice thing and helps, but we all know that there is so much surrounding the Christmas season to make it special that Easter just doesn't stack up.

That isn't really acceptable because Easter is really the high point of the Christian experience. No Easter, no salvation. And so for me it isn't OK to let the Easter season just sort of happen. At the same time Lent has gotten kind of twisted into some formalities that seem a bit out of touch and are adhered to by people in a seemingly less than authentic way.

That is why I am making Easter something special for me this year with a special emphasis on prayer and fasting. Fasting brings my body into subjection and prayer keeps me connected with my Savior. I am going to be doing an audio devotional on our Church website www.harvestcomchurch.org as an encouragement to the process.

I hope you will by these or other attempts make Easter a special season of the year. He is risen!

Change Brings Change

I was visiting with my friend Timo who is all about Church Planting in Berlin. His church, Pankow FeG, just moved from their one and only location to a location that is maybe 4-5 blocks away. They had been in their original location all of their 5 + years and so I am sure it was difficult to move. But one thing that stood out to me was that Timo has been reminding the folks that while it is a new location, other things will undoubtedly change as well. A new place will mean new folks checking them out. Their new place is near the bus/train/tram lines and so there will be a new crowd of people passing by on a daily basis. The Church will change, and not just because of a new location and new surroundings, but because the people will also change and that brings an unsettledness, but also a lot of opportunity. May we always be willing to change for the sake of the Kingdom, and for the sake of the glory of God.

Winter Retreat

We are getting closer and closer to number 7, our seventh annual Winter Retreat out at Camp Lebanon. I love our retreats at a lot of levels, but let me use our core values to be more specific.

Changed Lives - when we talk about changed lives we are specifically referring to the change that happens as people pass from death to life, or from not having a relationship with Christ to having one. Of course being out at Camp isn't specifically evangelistic, but it is a place where people can see and sense the love of Christ. I know we have had people warm to the things of Christ because of being with us out at Camp. And if people are getting right with Jesus then they are becoming more attractive to those who do not yet have Jesus in their lives.

Overflowing Relationships - This is the core value where we hit a home run every year! Relaxed time to simply be with people. If the Christian life is really more caught then taught, then this is a time that goes to the top of the list in helping form the life of the Christian. It is good stuff, and no one who has been out there has complained that they didn't have the opportunity to get to know people better.

Responding to God - Worship in all its fullness is spectacular as we are in a great setting, unencumbered by all else that demands our attention. Can you focus on our God at the Winter Retreat? I think you will find it to be so.

Equipping Followers - Growing as followers of Christ is to know Him and experience Him. We have had a fantastic line up of speakers guiding our learning each year, and this year is no exception. Steve Sanchez is going to be a good one...maybe even a 'best ever'. If you love to be challenged then prepare for it because its coming!

February 4-6...it is going to be great!

Good News for All

The angels told the Shepherds about 'Good News which shall be for all people'. One thought that I want to develop this Sunday is the idea that we can pretty easily get locked into a world that isn't very big. Technology makes the world small and we have to manage the amount of input we get, but we can easily start to hold the world at arms length and make it the world of our making. The bold proclamation of the angels is that this gospel is global and can never be something we have and hold onto as our own. It is for us and all our 'image bearing' brothers and sisters. Jesus is good news and that good news needs to be broadcast the world over. Just because we happen to live in Stearns County doesn't mean we can ignore the other 6 + billion people on the planet. They could use a little good news too.
May the joy of the season and the tender affections of family be a true blessing for you this Season. And may we consider together the Savior who is in fact the Savior of the World to whom alone belongs the praise of all peoples!

New Digs

Well now, that wasn't so bad! It was our third location in the past six months and it didn't feel all that different. It even has its advantages. We started and stayed for 5 1/2 years in the Junior High Little Theater. While it wasn't perfect it did come to seem like home. I remember walking in for a swim meet one time and thinking for a brief moment, "what are all these people doing at church?". Then, due to some asbestos removal, we were moved to the Senior High cafeteria (in the middle of the school complex). That was OK in that it was temporary and it actually has had some advantages. I know as a speaker it feels nice to have people closer than they were in the auditorium. But alas, even this location in the building couldn't last and so we move again...to the third place in the last six months, and this to the north end of the school complex. Starting this Sunday, November 14th we will be in the Elementary cafeteria. It too will be a different experience but one I am sure we can adapt to readily. In it all it forces to think through our whole Sunday morning experience. What are we there for? What are we trying to accomplish? What is the real permanence of Harvest Community Church? Through it all the answer has always been and will continue to be that we gather in Jesus name, as Jesus people, to encourage and challenge one another and to worship and focus on King of Kings and Lord of Lords. That will happen again this Sunday. Even in the Elementary cafeteria. Hope to see you Sunday!

Get to it!

This past Sunday was a get to it Sunday. Birch Hills has been commissioned to go and they are gone to do what God has called them to in Melrose. The ceremonies are over, it is time to get to it! Here at Harvest Community Church we have a calling that is no less sure. We have a mission field that has been put before us and we are called just as much to get to it! With that in mind we have a couple of opportunities that will keep us on task:
Mathetes - our discipleship group for those in 10th-12th grades. Our first gathering is at Dairy Queen Wednesday night, 6:30.
The Training of the Twelve - a training group for those who are or are willing to be spiritual leaders. 6:00a.m. this Sunday is our first time with breakfast out at Trucker's Inn.
The cost will be high at times. Shoot, Jesus asks us to come and die. But He also said that His yoke was easy, i.e. the best path to follow. Let's get to it!

Send Off

Yesterday at Harvest Community Church was unique. There aren't many Churches that ever plant another Church, much less send 30% of its people to that new Church; and so it was quite unique that we would be able to share together in the sending out of Birch Hills Community Church to our neighboring town of Melrose. It was a meaningful service and one that I hope propels the group on to life and ministry in their community. May God get all the glory!

As with any send off comes the time when those who aren't going have to look around and get to the task of picking up and moving forward. Actually it will be a 'Last Lunch' I suppose. We will be holding a commissioning service to bless those folks that will be launching a new community of believers in Melrose. It is going to be a powerful service as we engage in Kingdom work by blessing the work of our/their hands. After the service we will share together in a meal. It will be great and I hope and pray that it is our largest attendance as we link arms and hearts together on this most sacred obligation.
The potluck meal schedule: Last name A-L bring a main dish & dessert, last name M-Z bring a main dish & salad.
See you Sunday!

Church Planting: Here and There

It was great to have Timo Heimlich with us Sunday and for some home visits in the afternoon/evening. I am always blessed to get a different perspective from someone who is in the trenches and in another culture. It is really a privilege to have someone of Timo's caliber in partnership with us and really interested in our churches working together to help each other pursue God's calling on our ministries. I was particularly challenged to 'do things together'; the idea that we take someone along with us whereever we go with whatever it is we are doing. How do you make disciples of Jesus? Bring them along. When you think about it is at once the simplest, and maybe yet the most difficult way to make a disciple. Simple for sure. It is really no different that how we parent our children. Difficult for sure. No one I've ever talked to says that raising children is easy...at least not those who have done it. It is certainly the same way with making disciples. And what they see is plain to them. It is a high calling on you and I to live before Christ all the time. In the seemingly more 'spiritual' times of life, but no less in the mundane. Jesus calls us to Himself all the time, and He calls us to 'bring someone along'. Let us meditate on that challenge together...and then go do it!

What discipleship is not...

I have always found the passage from Luke 9:51-62 that we looked at yesterday to be particularly convicting. I would have to say that over time I think I have bolted from being a true disciple of Jesus by being the antithesis of what He desires as expressed in the four vignettes described. To review, we see what discipleship is not:

It is not Discipleship My Way - trying to conform Jesus to our expectations rather than what He is all about; doing the will of the Father

It is not Discipleship Doesn't Count the Cost - we can say whatever we want to but unless we are going whereever Jesus is going then it cannot be discipleship. Discipleship equals followership.

It is not Discipleship With Wrong Priorities - If Christ be God then there can be nothing that trumps following Him. He simply cannot be relegated to second place.

It is not Discipleship Of the Tender Affection - Family is important yes, but we can't allow anything that we might cling to distract us from continuing firm and resolute with Jesus.

Those are no small challenges. Those are not the principles of a soft and compliant Jesus of our making, but rather a call to a serious discipleship that places Jesus in a place of utmost priority...because He must be.

Overflowing Relationships

We were talking about why we are pursuing the idea of Church Planting on Sunday and we were talking about one of our core values, Overflowing Relationships. One of the reasons we plant Churches is because it develops grows those kinds of relationships. It seems counterintuitive, and yet, when is it that you become most closely connected with other people? The obvious answer is that you become most connected when you are on task with like minded people. That is why Church is never a spectator sport and why great relationships in the Church don't happen just because people are in the same general vicinity. Rather we grow relationships as we labor together in the gospel. The gospel is the high calling, overflowing relationships result. But because the gospel of Christ has preeminence, we can take the great relationships we have and make the changes necessary to see many more partake of the gospel of grace...even if it hurts relationally.

Staying on mission/staying on task:

Won't always be easy

Won't always feel good

Will bring glory to God

We have what it takes. Not because of anything good in us, but because everything good and necessary is in our Savior.

Responding to God

As we get closer to a launch of a Church Plant from our midst in Melrose, it seems that the concerns go higher as well. One of the things I would encourage us to see is that while things will be different, it will also be a time of blessing as we are obedient to what God has called to do. At the same time I want to encourage whatever questions there may be or concerns that you may have as it is different than anything you have been around before. Someday Church Planting is going to be the norm and we are going to have many different expressions of Church and they are going to look different, but for now it isn't normal and it raises concern. So ask.

Some thoughts on Responding to God from Acts 13 & 14:

Church leadership needs to focus first on its devotion to God

Church Planting is God's idea

Listening to the Spirit's leading starts with God's Word

When He says go it is only a question of obedience after that

It has always been God's desire to see Churches multiply their efforts

Obeying God's will doesn't necessarily make it easy (note Paul's time in Lystra)

All the results of obedience are to be directed to God alone

All glory is due Him

The stories we will tell will source from actions of faith

I have a dream...

Worship team was fantastic this morning...I love you guys!

Equipping Followers

I was encouraged to share a little more about the 'why' of Church Planting. We are in the place of privilege to be planting another Church so close by that is going to cost us so much. God is going to bless both here and there. Let's pray and believe God for it?

Some other thoughts:

I loved the story of the guys who got jumped by the evil spirit. You can't fake ministry in Jesus name for long before you get called on it!

I recently heard Tony Campolo say that the consumer minded church is going to be the reason for the continual decline of the Church. It is not about what you can get!

The best place for learning to walk with Jesus will never be the classroom.

The value of the classroom (the hall of Tyrannus) is as a place to come back to after being out ministering the gospel to people.

Why do we get so concerned about the possibility of young Christians promoting a heresy?

Heresy can be corrected in the context of a relationship.

I would rather straighten out some wrong thinking than to have to light a fire under somebody to get out and do something.

I am begging God to get us to the point of getting past 'polite' confession so that we can lay it all out before Him!

That is going to require a move of the Spirit among us.

Why is it so easy to 'talk tough' in the Worship service, and so difficult to go out and be the hands and feet of Jesus in the marketplace?

Lead somebody...don't tell me you don't know enough! You do!!!

Let's go Melrose, let's go Sauk Centre. The place for us to do the equipping necessary is in the battle and the battle is raging around us. While our auditorium is being renovated we have been on the move, and this Sunday will be no different. We will conduct our entire service out at Fairy Lake at the Lion's Shelter. Our time will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the shelter with worship in music and the Word. That will be followed by a time lakeside as we rejoice with those taking the step of obedience in the waters of baptism. Then a relaxing afternoon ensues with our picnic and hang out time. The Church is providing the hot dogs, buns, condiments, paperware, and drinks. Bring a salad or dessert to pass and we will have a great time together. I love the setting. Out for the day on the lake; good food, people everywhere, and a public display of faith is what make it a great time. Have you been baptised? And why would you want to? Well, I think there are a lot of good reasons like it is commanded, to do so is to be obedient, to do so is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. And just like Jesus, it isn't to forgive sins. I think the main thing we do when we step into the waters to be baptised is that we say 'me too'! I too am a follower of Jesus. Look at my life because though I do it imperfectly I am seeking to be a follower of Jesus.

So if you haven't been baptised my question is, "Why not?". Let's talk about it further. We have plenty of time to talk it through and for you to be convinced of the spiritual benefit to not only you, but to the community of faith. I too am a follower of Jesus Christ...to God be the glory!

Bike Run!

The first annual BBB (Bicycling, Bible, & Backbone) run will be held over two days Friday May 28 - Saturday May 29. The Bicycling part comes from the fact that we are planning to cover both the Central Lakes Trail starting in Fergus Falls and continuing on to Sauk Centre the first day. Then on Saturday going from Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. The Bible part refers to our breaks along the way to rest and to get motivated to finish the race. The Backbone part refers to the fact that this is one of those 'giants' we are planning to tackle. 101 miles in all (you may want to get some time in on your bike before coming along...). First off we will be vacating our Ministry Centre office space. It has been a good place for us for something like the past 4 1/2 years, but we are exploring other possibilities while seeking to be fiscally responsible too. So this month is it as we need to be out by months end. I plan to put some pictures on our website, www.harvestcomchurch.org, to give an idea of things that we are wanting to find a home for, some of which is give away, some of which we just want to find some storage.
Our second move will be to the Senior High cafeteria at the school. Asbestos abatement requires the school to go through the building and this summer the schedule is for the JH auditorium that we use. So, starting June 13th we will be meeting in the cafeteria, and entering through the senior high doors until the theater project is completed.
I suppose it depends on your stomach for change, but I personally am looking forward to it. Nothing about how we do ministry changes, just the locations. It's going to be a great summer!

Motorcycle Run

The first ever Harvest Community Church bike run left from the parking lot this morning after the Worship service. Five bikes may not sound like much, but thanks to Greg Reigel for organizing and getting this idea off the ground! Maybe five will turn into fifteen next year! Greg got a hold of some biker New Testaments to hand out and gave a personal testimony and then I (Pastor Carlyn) had the opportunity to prayer a blessing over the riders and their bikes. A great time and a great start to a (hopefully) new tradition. On Saturday May 1 we had 14 Harvest Community Church folks out to make it happen! We did a lot of raking/removing leaves. Greg got the pickup stuck (couldn't handle a Ford). Jim and Pat made progress on a bridge. A serious thank you to those who came out and helped. It is a pretty small thing in the big picture. Whenever you look at the auditorium on a Sunday morning you see one of two scenes. Either the scene before we break for refreshements, or the scene after. They look different because we have such a nice group of kids and many of them are engaged in Kingdom Kids and Nursery after the break.
Here is my encouragement...leave a ministry legacy with those kids! It would be great from my perspective if our kids growing up around us were able to get input from the adults at church, and it can happen as adults volunteer a Sunday here and there to speak into these kids lives by being their 'teacher for a Sunday'. I know people oftentimes don't think of themselves as a teacher and it may in fact not be your gifting. However love is the trump card, and we can all do that! So rather than signing up to teach for a Sunday, why not sign up to 'love for a Sunday' and spend some time loving on those kids. Let me know or Lori Mynczywor know and we will put you in contact. You can give up a sermon for a Sunday, and both the kids and me will love you for it!

A Season of Preparation

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten season for us in the West. There are of course many different traditions that try to give emphasis to this season, and we have some of our own. First of all, we will have Rice Bowls available this Sunday and through the remainder of Lent. The idea behind the rice bowls is to go without or go with lesser (a meal a week with rice) to remind ourselves of the passion of Christ and the coming celebration of Easter. You could fast and pray, observe special times of devotion...the point is to attune ourselves to the Savior. While that ought to be our continual goal, we do give it special emphasis and attention during this season. Also, we have some special times for congregational prayer this season. Thursday night for the ladies (7:00 p.m.) and Tuesday mornings for the guys (5:30 a.m.) both at the Ministry Centre. Hopefully you will engage the season and together we can prepare our hearts for the coming of Messiah. Actually some say yellow, others orange...whatever it is it is time for a change. This Friday it will change. You can get in on the change by buying a chance to either help make the change or direct someone in how you would like the change to be made. It works like this: we are collecting $10 per chance and then putting all names in a hat. The name drawn on Friday evening will either get to do the clipping or direct someone to do the clipping of my hair in any pattern or design desired! Penny Deters is coordinating this effort and can be reached at penny.deters@aol.com
So what's the deal? Another fundraiser for a poor church in need? Actually, we are raising the money to go to Beau Polensky for costs associated with his medical needs. A benefit was held in Alexandria Sunday January 31st, and the money raised for this segment of the hair challenge will all go to his benefit. So I would encourage you to get involved, have fun, and help Beau!

Fundraising Fun

It was very gratifying to me that we were able to raise over $700 for the Huston benefit (and that number is still growing) and to know that it only cost about $6 to get blond hair! Sauk Centre resident and actually a neighbor of mine, Jen Huston, was in a serious accident that has left her needing ongoing physical therapy, and has left her and her husband Tim with the loss of their unborn child. Tough times. There is a benefit fundraiser coming up and of course we want to help. So, I have challenged the young people of Harvest Community Church to collect money with the top fundraiser having the opportunity to pick the color of my hair! Time is running out on the challenge as money has to be raised by Saturday afternoon, January 2nd. What color will win? Come find out Sunday morning! If you want to find a kid to join in the challenge, email me and I will pass on the names of those I know are trying to win pastorcarlyn@harvestcomchurch.org Another point I am making with the coloring of my hair is the radical/revolutionary message of Jesus. We are beginning a sermon series through the gospel of Luke this Sunday, and no, colored hair is really radical or revolutionary, but it is different (at least for a pastor) and can maybe jump start our thinking about the person of Christ and the absolutely revolutionary nature of His life and message. Hope to see you soon!

Seasonal Warmth

The Christmas season is upon us and as long as there is a fire in the fireplace I am loving it! We are pregnant with another child. Harvest Community Church is pregnant that is as we look forward to a new Church in Melrose under the pastoral leadership of Paul Klassen and his team. I think the biggest comment I get is, "it's only eight miles away"! And so it is. Here is the thing, the gospel can never go static. Either we are part of advancing the Kingdom of God or we are watching it slip. That is why we must and we are engaging the local culture. It will happen in Melrose as that team gets up and running and connecting with people and inviting those people into relationship with Christ. It will happen in Sauk Centre as we connect with people and invite people into relationship with Christ. It is not wrong to look around and be comfortable, it would be wrong to stay there. And so the call in Melrose, and the call in Sauk Centre, and the call wherever God's people are located and in whatever places of influence He has put us, is to engage the culture and the people in it. Our Lord led the way!

St. Louis recap

Aaron and I got back from St. Louis on Friday after a week with eight of our senior high youth on a mission trip with an organization called Youthworks. This is the fifth mission trip for our youth and the fourth one with Youthworks. Having been on all of them so far I would say that it was probably the best experience so far! The reason for such platitudes is that the group we took down was overall different than any other and I think perhaps more impacted than any other. I have to say that there is something that these mission's trips provide that you can't make up or create in any artificial way. We were eating lunch with women who had just recently come off the street, playing with kids who thought a squirt bottle and some attention were heavenly, and praying for people with nothing but difficulty as immigrants and who at the same time wanted to express their thanks in some very tangible ways. I have to say that even a forty something pastor who has been in a lot of places can't help but be touched and challenged by interacting at that level. The challenge is to take those lessons and apply them in a more local context, which is the ongoing challenge to all of us to make application to what we know. I for one believe that these kids come home and are not quite the same as when they left. They will of course have the same challenge of having to apply what they experienced to their life going forward, but they now have a responsibility to the things they saw and I trust that by the Spirit it will make a difference first in them, and then ultimately through them. This must be our prayer.

Crises Response

Our 'Wednesdays in July' time will continue throughout the month. I want to tell you about the last two Wednesdays, July 22 and 29. It will be a discussion I am referring to as 'Crises Response'. During these two weeks we will be discussing how we ought to be using Crises to bring real help in times of hurt while at the same time communicating the gospel of Christ. We are going to be thinking through what kinds of things the Church ought to be involved in, how we determine what we will and won't respond to, and what structures need to be in place to respond effectively. We will also get practical and discuss how to recruit and make it happen. I think it is going to be significant time and I hope you will consider being part of the discussion!

Habla espanol?

Ben is going to be conducting a few weeks of introductory Spanish lessons for all of us who would like to be a little more friendly to our neighbors. That is the kind of thing that brings a smile to my face as it is followers of Jesus taking the initiative to share his love where people are gathered. It isn't a ministry of the Church, yet it is the hands and feet of Jesus. By the way, we are calling people to the person of Christ anyway, whether or not they ever walk through the doors of HCC. Let me tell you about the first three Wednesdays. We are going to be meeting at the Ministry Centre to talk about 'Sharing Your Faith'. Now, as soon as you hear that, it may not sound like the information you have been waiting to get to. But, it is a topic of prime importance for those who name the Name of Christ because we have to know the answer to that question of the hope that we have in us and we are called to do so with gentleness and reverence. We can do that and I hope you will consider coming for three weeks to sharpen up on how we can do just that. It will be very practical with plenty of interaction time, so it promises to be fun. Really. And catch this, even if you can't make it all three weeks, come one or two times and you will still get some good stuff out of your investment of time. And that is a teacher's guarantee you can take to the bank! Hope to see you at 521 Sinclair Lewis Avenue on Wednesdays July 1st, 8th, and/or 15th from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.!

Baptism Sunday

We have a Baptism time along with a picnic coming up on June 28th. We will be out at Lion's Park at Fairy Lake in the afternoon to share a potluck picnic together and then go get some people wet in the Lake! It is a great time and if you are considering baptism, then be sure to let Pastor Carlyn know or any of the guys on the Pastoral Leadership Team.

Just a couple of thoughts about baptism that I would like to share. If you read the book of Acts you come away with a definite understanding that in that day they "believed and were baptized". Then, when you look at Harvest Community Church you notice that we only baptize once a year. What gives? Well, other than the fact that the lake is cold and/or frozen most of the year, there is one difference between our day and the days recorded in Acts. In those days it was without question a big deal to be baptized. You were at that moment making a public declaration that you were now serving a different King...the stakes were high and everybody knew it. In our day the culture is maybe ambivalent at best, nobody really cares. Therefore it is imperative that we are sure we understand as best we can what the motive is behind those that seek baptism. In the early church is was clear, today we have to be sure that it is about making a public declaration for Christ.

It is in this line that I would suggest that our kids be at least 12 years old when they get baptized. I will of course honor a parents desire, but my reason is so that public and memorable aspects of the baptism be seen. I have witnessed, I am sure you have too, that kids begin to think differently around that time. The first time we here about the boy Jesus was around that age as well.

So, not to discourage anyone, but let's make baptism a time of celebration and commitment. Celebration that it is Jesus, and Jesus only who saves from sin. And commitment, the commitment of the one to Jesus our Lord.

Looking forward to it. Hope you can mark that day on the calendar and be there. And hopefully you would consider baptism as a act of commitment if you haven't done so already!

Orphanage help

Just made the deposit today from our Rice Bowls emphasis. $180 and change was collected! Now this time we are further strengthening those bonds by being an encouragement and by bolstering our prayer partnership them.
Please be sure to prayer for all those things we take for granted: safe travel, good health, health and well being for those left at home...but also be praying for times of encouragement both for those going and those being met, pray for the deepening of relationships, pray for the expansion of the church, pray for a revealing of God's will and way as we seek to see our partnership be meaningful and helpful, both to us and to them. Church membership is an interesting thing because you can attend all your life without joining in any formal way and for the most part I guess nobody cares. It certainly doesn't impact your eternal standing before God. Yet, there is something to be said about signing on with any group in such a way that you are in effect saying, "I stand with this group of people and I believe in the direction we are going". That is the kind of opportunity we want to provide: an identification with Harvest Community Church as one of the expressions of what God is doing in this community.

This Sunday, March 22nd, right after the morning worship time at the Little Theater, we will meet over at the Ministry Centre to talk more about why we do what we do. It is a relaxed time to ask and understand what goes into making HCC what it is. There is responsibility involved mainly in the form of committment to a vision of what God would do. There is also reward in partnering with a group of people to be used of God in ways we may not even imagine today. There is a more immediate reward too: lunch! Hope to see you Sunday!

I Can't Wait for Summer!!!

I just saw the forecast and it promises above freezing temps for more than one day in a row! June 12-14th

Summer Camp at Camp Lebanon - we are a member church at one the truly great camps around. Our sign up deadline is March 29th, so get (on the information table) and fill out a registration for your favorite camper. You can either pay in full or set up a payment plan. This is one investment that won't lose value!

Youthworks trip to St. Louis - those going in to 9th grade through those graduating seniors are eligible for the trip to the Gateway Arch! Youthworks staff do an amazing job of providing a great experience which makes the teaching come to life. It is life changing and eye opening...I think every kid needs to get themselves on this kind of trip, only one problem...we only have openings for eight youth. So, $100 deposit by March 29th gets you on the list

Burning Man experience - a week of instant community in the Nevada desert. This one isn't for those looking for a nice vacation. This will be a test of ones faith, and living that faith out, with 50,000 others from all over the world. It is artsy and fresh, and not for everyone. Curious? Check out www.burningman.com

Also on the calendar is our annual baptism and picnic at Fairy Lake. I think it is a fun thing to communicate because many times it is met in almost disbelief that we would cancel. What if visitors show up? What about those who can't make it to the Retreat? Not to minimize those questions, I like to explain what Church is really about...a people gathered. Leaving the building is a healthy thing in that it reminds us of what the Church, any local Church, really is...a people of God gathered together in His name. So it is OK to not be where we 'normally' are on Sunday morning. And while there is of course the possibility of misunderstanding, I would suggest that it is more than offset by the very real understanding that comes from being somewhere else...not to mention the awesome benefits to the Body of being in an unhurried setting laughing, playing, eating, and living together. There is something way more authentic about that picture than any Sunday morning 'service' in which we would participate.

So, Harvest Community Church family, see you at Camp Lebanon. Oh, and if you were going to come visit us this Sunday I am sorry we won't be there. We will be back at 10:00 a.m. on February 15th. Until then, the Church has left the building!

The Growing Church Family

Charlie George Heipel
Born this morning around 9:00 a.m. Hopefully I can post a picture tomorrow and we can get the first ever web published pics of CH!
Thank You Lord for the goodness You bestow and of which we are no more aware than when we see new life brought into this world. Great news! We are still having our annual Harvest Community Church Winter Retreat, but this year it is on a different weekend than the breakfast! More good news! Paul Klassen, our Church Planting Intern, is also a member of the Lion's Club and is your inside source for all things breakfast, including tickets. So, grab Paul this Sunday, or contact him before if you would like, 352-4034, and get your tickets and support this worthy cause. Here is my suggestion: meet me for Church at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday, then let's eat pancakes together down the hall! As I write I haven't heard the explanation for this picture, but it seems clear that this is the food pantry that Ben has for his food supply. The last picture I saw of him was one in which he looked good, so it must not be too bad...

This past couple of weeks has got me to thinking about all the things I pursue to gratify the senses. Perhaps if you are a resolution maker like I am (I prefer 'goal setter') then you only need to look to your list for 2009 to find something on the "I could do with less" category. Mine includes one for a lessoning of the midsection...about 10 pounds worth.

But even in a spiritual sense, I am becoming more aware that I am oftentimes looking for the 'gratifying' part of being obedient and walking with Christ. I don't do things for Christ to be noticed...but then again it is nice. It kind of goes something like, 'gee, did anybody hear that sermon?'. The question I am pondering as I get alone with God is, "am I satisfied with just Him"...I suspect that honesty is going to be difficult, but a step in the less is more direction. Less need for human applause (or notice) is more, or leads to more of a rightly related son to the Father.

Playing politics

Living and growing up on the gravel road out in the country, politics was something that you were aware of, TV ads and all, but it never seemed like something anybody was too concerned about. Maybe it was just being a kid. Maybe it was because it didn't seem to matter who won because farm policy was always about the same anyway. No matter, most of life was pretty removed from politics...at least the ones where votes were taken and somebody got elected and somebody didn't.

There was of course another kind of politics evident in family dealings, especially at the extended family level, the politics of who likes who, who is mad at who, and how one might 'get back' at someone else. Be sure to smile and pretend like everything is OK on the outside, but 'play politics' behind the scenes to get at or get what you want.

It seems to me that life in the church of Jesus Christ can be like playing politics. It must not be that way. When a person is self seeking, or selfish, and by the way who isn't to some degree, we tend to do and say things to manipulate people and settings to our advantage. We tend to smile on the outside while we seethe with revenge on the inside just waiting for our opportunity to get back, or slyly working the angles to arrange things to our advantage, or laying low to try to find out who is on 'our side' or to give people a test to find out 'if they love me'.

It turns out that no matter how deep the pity party we allow ourselves to wallow in, Jesus followers are called to something different. It isn't playing politics at all. Think for a minute about some of the things Jesus had to say and see how much it sounds like he is talking like a politician. Turn the other cheek...go the extra mile...do not judge...leave your gift at the altar (the gift for God) and go be reconciled to your brother...blessed are you when men heap insults upon you...you cannot serve God and money...how can you love God whom you can't see but not love your brother who you can...

This world and the people we intersect with will never be a better place by playing politics and deftly maneuvering. It will be changed as people become Christ followers, disciples of Jesus Christ and invite others into that life changing relationship. Vote for who you think is best, but live for Jesus!

Enough

Is Jesus enough for you?

That question is one of those questions that sounds a bit laughable up front (the obvious answer being of course, yes) but then it begins to penetrate after a while. As I sit here plunking away it has been what may be considered a historic week in terms of the economic realities. Then again it is a normal week with all the business that life brings with it, relational tweaks, and 'must do to do lists'. The penetrating part of the question, which I heard from a speaker earlier in the week, is that upon reflection in the midst of the realities of life, it is a fair question. And, a question that isn't so easily answered in the affirmative. Not so easy because in the realities of life we do seem to want what we have our sites set upon, whatever that may be, and not on the Savior of our souls.

The question turns out to be like being on that gravel road again. You know, the one that is going to get you from where you are to where you really want to be. But the one that has a lot more interest off to the sides than what is right straight ahead. I know I have nearly driven off the road, actually have if you count the edges of the ditch, in my peering off into the corn/bean fields, or watching deer out walking in the field. So it is in life that we tend to know in our heart and mind that we want to stay on the gravel road, the path toward Jesus, but we get so dog gone distracted. They are lesser things to be sure, but so tangible compared to the invisible Jesus.

Well, I don't know what else to do. I just have to pause and ask myself the question again every so often...and be honest with the reply in order that I make amends as necessary. Jesus is enough.

Church Stew

No question about it, the highlight of my week was the Shepherd Group I attended this past Wednesday. The official program says that we are studying Colossians, but the group understands that before we get to that and our parallel study on being a Witness, we would all come prepared to share what God is doing in our own lives. We never got to the 'official' study, and I loved it! What we did instead was to have a great discussion on things going on in people's lives and how that intersects with God and His Word. While it of course doesn't mean that a leader shouldn't be listening to what the Lord wants to speak through them, it is refreshing and meaningful to be in the circle talking about significant stuff that will impact the way we think/live the Christian life from that point on.

Does the format of a group of people coming together to share what the Spirit is doing feel strange? It is good tasting stew when everybody contributes something and we together sense the Spirit's leading. Does it feel disjointed just because there is no 'talking head' leading the discussion? I suppose it is a more difficult group to belong to because it requires a level of authenticity and God activity in our own lives.

1 Corinthians 14:26...when you come together everyone has a hymn, a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or and interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. That to me is church stew, can't happen at the Sunday morning event, but it is a very satisfying meal with friends and children of God.

Giving Credit to the Guys

Now that we are solidly into the football season we are also in the midst of listening to the stars get interviewed about their greatness. Often, the big star will make some comment about the guys on the team to the effect that he didn't do it alone, it was a team effort. Of course all of us listening in believe that he doesn't mean what he says but that rather it is the polite thing to do so that he doesn't look like some arrogant cocky kid. The only thing is, what he says, whether he believes it or not, is absolutely true. Just ask a superstar who isn't doing so well now that the teamates around him aren't so good.

I think of that need for team every time I get together with the leadership team at Harvest Community Church. I am privileged to work with a group of guys that has great relationships and great relationships that continue to grow. In an earlier blog I suggested that churches tend to be led by guys with similar giftings to their own detriment. After reflecting on the group of guys I get to work with, I realize that one of our strengths is the differences that exist among us. We are not the same, do not have the same background, do not share the same interests, do not view problems and opportunities the same, and just do not have the same giftings or abilities. Yet, at the end of the day, we are lock step together heading in the same direction. If I had one gift to impart to anybody out there in business or sport, and of course especially those pastoring new church startups, this blessing of a varied leadership would top my list. May God's kingdom grow, no matter the individual effort, as healthy teams strive to be all that God has called them to, for His glory, and His alone.

Man, I have a great team surrounding me and all the credit for our wins goes to them! And I mean it!

Catching the Plague

I was doing a little driving this week and heard a short quiz on the radio station I was listening to. The answer to one of the questions was that the black plague still infects approximately 200 people per year around the world, but that with modern medicine there almost no deaths because of it. Quite a difference from the near 75 million who are thought to have died from this back in the 1300's. It is said to have wiped out from 30-60% of the European population of the time. Which leads me to reflect on another thing I heard this week. President Hamel of the Evangelical Free Church of America suggested in a panel talking about reconciliation that we need to 'get over the idea that to be with sinners is to catch what they have. If that is a problem then the problem is with us, not with them'. (Not a word for word quote, but close)

I'm not sure there is need for much comment, just reflection. This is a relevant topic to think upon because the church is the place where people seem to feel judged, and by that I mean Christians seem to be very aware that other Christians are watching and that therefore they have to be very careful who they associate with lest they be thought to be partaking in the sinful lifestyle of the 'others'. Can we please have a discussion about that so that we can get over it? Jesus got accused of all kind of sinful associations and it didn't seem to bother Him. I still let it bother me and affect me, but to the degree that it prevents me from reaching out and making a difference it is wrong. Eternally wrong.

Teams that don't agree

I have been reflecting this past day on the leadership team that Paul mentions in Ephesians 4:11, and it occurs to me that this will be a team that doesn't agree on everything. If you have an Evangelist type person who is always on the go looking for new ways to see the gospel expand, and you also have a Pastor who is looking to heal brokeness, you may have a meeting where the only we can agree upon is that we have different goals in mind. The thing is, they will always find there legitimacy in the Scriptures. The Evangelist will be able to point to the activity of Paul and the Great Commission passages. The Pastor will counter with all those ideas of discipleship and healing wounds and growth toward maturity. Of course, the right answer will be yes. Both are right and necessary...but I wonder, would we allow for that much diversity? After all, we only pay pastors, and pastors typically only allow on their team those who are team players, those who will subordinate their desires to the will of the team, and that usually means the desires of the leader of the team. Yet, I think it is vital to being the church that God has called us to be about.

John Wooden was the coach of the UCLA Bruins and a man of God whom I admire. His thoughts on this topic of diverse opinions and approaches was that it was all a necessary part to having the best possible team. When the men stepped on the court they were not acting as individuals and they were never to 'do their own thing'. They absolutely had to play as a team. But practice and interaction off the court could be testy and tough because everyone comes from a different strength and perspective. Could we capture that mentality? Do we have that kind of interdependent/independent giftedness on our team? I am not sure it is optional...
